1. a sinking spiral

    A cracked melody,
a borrowed spring of unconscious thought.
Swinging from heart to a heart,
a battered and bruised song of iniquity.
A tenuous grasp reminiscent of weaved fingers,
a physical sigh, these cringing voices
sheer the hides of the men who speak with
    devils.

    An angel’s apology determines
how deep the teeth sink into supple skin.
Biting to break the layer that hides sin.
A dexterous gambling man sits patiently,
a crow eyes the cards, men gossip, and women
show off their scars. Roles reverse, so says the sky
reinvent the structure of social ties and lies and dormant art
a shallow reverberating current, futile in its attempts to catch decency.

A swaggering sailor demands his winnings, a young girl cries for help,
a worried mother screams her name, a tailor walks on without shame.
a ruined husk of human hatred, a willing battered bag of bricks.
A loving family ruined, a ruthless pig is split.
A magazine defiles the errors stuck to the heart
of every bothered citizen whose mind cannot restart.
Once vandalized it melts, once cracked it can’t return,
to the glory of its past, the glory none can discern.
A rake is resting on a tree stump,
    a murderer is loosed,
    chained creatures sing a requiem,
    a culture of hate consumes.

  2. sordid once more

    Staggered arrogance burns my lips
I spoke sounds and cited the list
of churning lies and wrist flicks.
Fingers pointing at my soul, haggard
entity drunk with enmity, goal in sight
but choking on sticks and stones.

Gen. 1:1–11:26 Primeval History. The first eleven chapters of Genesis differ from those that follow. Chapters 12–50 focus on one main family line in considerable detail, whereas chs. 1–11 could be described as a survey of the world before Abraham. These opening chapters differ not only in their subject matter from ch. 12 onward, but also because there are no real parallels to the patriarchal stories in other literatures. In contrast to the patriarchal stories, however, other ancient nonbiblical stories do exist recounting stories about both creation and the flood. The existence of such stories, however, does not in any way challenge the authority or the inspiration of Genesis. In fact, the nonbiblical stories stand in sharp contrast to the biblical account, and thus help readers appreciate the unique nature and character of the biblical accounts of creation and the flood. In other ancient literary traditions, creation is a great struggle often involving conflict between the gods. The flood was sent because the gods could not stand the noise made by human beings, yet they could not control it. Through these stories the people of the ancient world learned their traditions about the gods they worshiped and the way of life that people should follow. Babylonian versions of creation and flood stories were designed to show that Babylon was the center of the religious universe and that its civilization was the highest achieved by mankind.

Reading Genesis, readers can see that it is designed to refute these delusions. There is only one God, whose word is almighty. He has only to speak and the world comes into being. The sun and moon are not gods in their own right, but are created by the one God. This God does not need feeding by man, as the Babylonians believed they did by offering sacrifices, but he supplies man with food. It is human sin, not divine annoyance, that prompts the flood. Far from Babylon’s tower (Babel) reaching heaven, it became a reminder that human pride could neither reach nor manipulate God.

These principles, which emerge so clearly in Genesis 1–11, are truths that run through the rest of Scripture. The unity of God is fundamental to biblical theology, as is his almighty power, his care for mankind, and his judgment on sin. It may not always be obvious how these chapters relate to geology and archaeology, but their theological message is very clear. Read in their intended sense, they provide the fundamental presuppositions of the rest of Scripture. These chapters should act as eyeglasses, so that readers focus on the points their author is making and go on to read the rest of the Bible in light of them.

  4. the key

    Morning shiver whispers, harmonized souls
words fraught with the meaning they hold.
A subtle glance, a smug glare
provide the depth when our words fail.
    Sarcastic remarks, and dulcet tones
tie knots despite our sudden woes.
Recalling stories, and roaming reedy fields
fashioning our heartfelt memories, tempering our shields.
Not just gazing in your eyes, but looking out at the sky
“for we are not alone, we are never alone.” says I.
Abiding in the truth we see
(The very truth we hear with faith,
the very truth that we believe!)
    and the Cross,
    the precious Cross,
    is the key.

  5. King’s Kaleidoscope

Changing the format of hymns to facilitate a new appreciation for the words.

  6. "No subject is terrible if the story is true, if the prose is clean and honest, and if it affirms courage and grace under pressure."
    - Ernest Hemingway (Woody Allen)

This movie was riddled with fantastic moments.
  7. "WHEN I heard the learn’d astronomer,
When the proofs, the figures, were ranged in columns before me,
When I was shown the charts and diagrams, to add, divide, and measure them,
When I sitting heard the astronomer where he lectured with much applause in the lecture-room,
How soon unaccountable I became tired and sick,
Till rising and gliding out I wander’d off by myself,
In the mystical moist night-air, and from time to time,
Look’d up in perfect silence at the stars."
    - Walt Whitman

Oh, how is it, that I find myself sliding back and forth between the two….
  8. Word

I think that words have power. They can build romances, ruin friendships, stifle wars, capture imaginations. What else can make such claims? It is in words that we spell out what we think, say, and do. They are the medium we use to communicate. Words are the atoms of language. The metaphorical scotch tape that holds everything together. For it is by words that we understand, wonder, question, inspect, elaborate, and know. Some may object to this. They might shrug their shoulders and say “my feelings are inexplicable, no words can do them justice.” I always laugh because it sounds like a joke. Though at times words are hard to come by, ultimately they are pervasive. Though feelings are hard to explain, in calling them inexplicable you are explaining them, with WORDS! Such irony is not lost, such humor is obvious because you speak my language. Maybe I spoke too soon. ”Do you like, speak English? I mean this is America, you know? We should totally all speak English.” No respect for other languages is funny when you don’t speak English properly.

So words are losing their meanings, which frankly is all they have. For they are nothing more than beautiful place holders, like a fine china set. Dishes are nouns, and utensils verbs, etc. You get the idea. What happens when you drop dishes on the ground? They shatter. Useless, right? What happens when you tear words from their meanings, and make them mean any damn thing? They shatter. Useless.

  10. Conduit, Blessing

    A handful of stars
    thats what you are.
    Cast into life
    as if to sever strife.
I’ve followed a trail to You,
    I see fair locks glow
    I see blue orbs shine,
in dreams, they are called mine-
    recognizing who holds the tether
    makes it all the better
    it is no earthly fetter,
    grace likened to a feather,
    holding us together.
    Replete with forgiveness,
    a heart bare and slashed,
    pieces strewn by guilt,
    with the color to match.
    A black core
    reduced to nothing more
    than wickedness,
    always humming in darkness. Unacceptable.
    Yet still you shine
with the truth on your mind
    defending against condemnation’s sigh.
Ignoring my plea, for you to see
    each burr of evil
    inside of me.
The act of repentance is done
    freedom from darkness won
    Then grace reminds
    transforms and realigns
    recreates and designs
a new heart in place of mine.
    Now reconciled.

    Here ends the spell
    of Earth and of Hell.
